Maria Yee and her boyfriend Aloysius booked flights to South Africa with their sights set on the abundant wildlife in Kruger National Park. Read on for Maria’s advice to travelers and some of her favorite moments in South Africa.
**Where are you from? Let’s delve into your travel style in more detail.**
Maria and Aloysius, a dynamic couple, hail from the vibrant city-state of Singapore. Their travel experiences often involve shorter excursions, primarily within the diverse continent of Asia. Prior to their South African adventure, their only foray beyond the Asian continent was a trip to Germany several years prior. Therefore, another long-haul journey was definitely overdue, something both Maria and Aloysius keenly felt. They both lean towards leisurely paced trips punctuated by exciting sights, a significant dose of history and culture, and the thrill of adventure. Exploring new horizons and immersing themselves in novel experiences is central to their travel ethos. Before embarking on their South Africa adventure, neither of them had ever set foot on African soil, which added to the excitement and anticipation. South Africa truly lived up to all expectations and more. The country’s remarkably diverse landscape and varied environments created a truly unforgettable and wonderful trip that exceeded even their highest hopes.
**How did you ultimately select South Africa, and particularly Kruger National Park, as the ultimate destination for your holiday? Let’s understand the reasoning behind this particular choice.**
The initial travel plan revolved around a trip to Japan for their holiday. However, as they began the process of booking flights, they made an interesting discovery. They realized that the number of air miles required to fly to South Africa was virtually the same as the air miles needed for Japan. This realization made the decision feel very simple. Neither of them had visited South Africa before, but they agreed that experiencing a safari adventure was an absolute must. Maria sought recommendations from friends and acquaintances and, time and again, Kruger National Park emerged as a top suggestion. It is one of the largest and most renowned game reserves in South Africa.
As they began their research, it quickly became apparent that there was an overwhelming abundance of alternative reserves and numerous lodging options, ranging from rustic to luxurious. Maria soon realized that she faced the daunting task of countless hours dedicated to meticulous research. The aim was to meticulously search to find the perfect safari lodge to suit their particular needs and preferences.
Thankfully, through the platform of kimkim, they connected with Howard from Africa Travel Gateway. Howard played a pivotal role in simplifying the complex decision-making process by effectively narrowing down the myriad choices based on Maria and Aloysius’s specific preferences and requirements. Ultimately, they chose to stay in a private reserve strategically located adjacent to Kruger. This location offered a harmonious blend of all their desired elements. These included private game drives led by knowledgeable and experienced guides, a prime location within the broader park area that allowed them to spot animals even while relaxing at the lodge, and comfortably appointed accommodations, all at a reasonable and affordable price point. Both the planning phase of the trip and the safari experience itself were absolutely outstanding, exceeding their expectations in every way.
**Considering your moderate budget, did you encounter any specific challenges while planning your safari? Elaborate on any budgetary constraints you may have faced.**
Planning a safari independently can present various challenges, particularly for travelers coming from Asia, where it’s common practice to book through local tour agencies. The safari options offered by these agencies typically fall into two distinct categories: large group tours or highly personalized luxury trips. These options tend to be premium priced, and neither quite met their specific requirements. Before discovering kimkim, Maria contacted an Asia-based agency specializing in safaris to obtain a price quotation. Unsurprisingly, their budget was far below the agency’s minimum requirement. While they valued quality service and an enriching experience, a simple yet comfortable safari lodge would have been entirely satisfactory. Therefore, planning a safari within their specified budget seemed like a significant hurdle at first. However, everything eventually worked out seamlessly and positively through kimkim.
**Thinking back to your time in Kruger National Park, what particular moment or experience stands out as your absolute favorite? Additionally, did you face any unexpected challenges or situations that you had not anticipated beforehand?**
The entire experience was exceptional and created lasting memories. Upon arriving at the safari lodge, they discovered that they had been assigned the best tent in the entire lodge – a remarkable stroke of luck. This tent offered a direct and unobstructed view of the nearby watering hole. This allowed them to relax in bed or sit on the front porch and observe the animals as they came to quench their thirst or bathe in the water right before their eyes. This was simply amazing! They were fortunate enough to witness elephants, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, and African buffalos, among many others, in their natural habitat. They also managed to see all of the iconic “Big Five” within their first two game drives. Each subsequent game drive proved to be even more incredible than the last.
On a less positive note, Maria’s boyfriend, Aloysius, unfortunately, fell ill while on safari. This was likely due to a combination of the journey itself and the heat. The sun was incredibly intense, especially during the afternoons. Fortunately, they were adequately prepared with medication to alleviate the symptoms. Maria strongly advises other travelers to pack extra vitamin C, doctor-recommended travel medication, and comprehensive sun protection to be prepared for any eventuality.
**How did the safari fit into the broader context of your South Africa itinerary? Would you recommend this particular route and combination of experiences to other travelers?**
The remainder of their South Africa journey focused on exploring Cape Town and the scenic Garden Route further south. Kruger National Park, being situated in the northeastern part of the country, is quite a significant distance away from those other locations. While there are numerous highly recommended safari options available along the Garden Route, which can be more easily accessible and convenient, they intentionally chose Kruger because of its reputation as one of the largest reserves in South Africa. They felt that Kruger offered a greater diversity of landscapes and wildlife. In retrospect, the extra travel required to reach Kruger was definitely worth it, and they would wholeheartedly recommend it to other adventurous travelers.
**Do you have any specific advice for travelers who are on a budget and are interested in experiencing a safari in South Africa? What cost-saving tips can you offer?**
There are various approaches to planning a budget-friendly safari, depending on what’s most important to each traveler. One option is to stay outside Kruger National Park and then embark on self-guided drives into the park each day. Another possibility is to hire guides on an ad-hoc basis. Maria and Aloysius opted to stay within the park and participate in private game drives, but they chose simpler accommodations to reduce overall costs. Many game reserves are also less expensive than Kruger. Choosing a reserve closer to the Garden Route can also help minimize additional travel expenses.
**Where are you hoping to embark on your next travel adventure? What destinations are currently on your travel radar?**
Mongolia and Morocco are currently the destinations at the top of their list! They both have a strong interest in exploring these culturally rich and geographically diverse countries.
