Santa Cruz Mountains And Slow Coast Day Trip

The stretch of coast between Santa Cruz and Pacifica (known to locals as the Slow Coast) is packed with amazing views, charming small towns, and beautiful beaches, yet despite its proximity to San Francisco is much less crowded than Big Sur and other famous sections of California’s dramatic coastline. The adjacent Santa Cruz Mountains also contain a number of fun diversions for outdoor lovers, allowing for the creation of a jam-packed day trip loop.

## Exploring the Wonders of the Bay Area and the Slow Coast: A Detailed Road Trip Itinerary

This journey, commencing and concluding in the vibrant city of San Francisco, unveils a tapestry of experiences, from serene Japanese gardens to the majestic redwood forests and the captivating allure of the Pacific coastline. The initial destination on this remarkable route is the picturesque South Bay suburb of **Saratoga**. For a truly scenic approach, we highly recommend taking the 280 freeway. This route, spanning approximately 50 miles and taking around 45 minutes, offers breathtaking views of the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. As you traverse this landscape, you’ll be treated to a visual feast of rolling hills and verdant scenery.

Upon your arrival in **Saratoga**, a delightful coffee break is undoubtedly well-deserved. **Sue’s Gallery and Cafe** beckons with its inviting outdoor seating and its reputation for crafting exquisite mochas and matcha lattes. What makes this café truly unique is that these beverages are served in beautiful pottery pieces, each a work of art in itself. These pieces are also available for purchase at the gallery located conveniently next door, providing a perfect opportunity to acquire a memorable souvenir.

From **Sue’s Gallery and Cafe**, a short jaunt up the road will lead you to the **Hakone Estate and Gardens**, a true gem and one of the oldest Japanese gardens on the American side of the Pacific Ocean. This meticulously crafted oasis is well worth a stop to stretch your legs and immerse yourself in its tranquility. Prepare to be captivated by the stunning architecture, the serene pond and cascading waterfall, the contemplative Zen garden, and the peaceful pathways that meander along the hillside. Admission to this enchanting sanctuary is $10 for adults and $8 for children aged 5 and older. It’s a small price to pay for a truly enriching experience.

After your restorative visit to Hakone, you have two options for continuing your journey. The most direct route to your next destination, Los Gatos, involves heading southeast via CA-9 and connecting to CA-17. However, for those seeking a more visually rewarding experience, we wholeheartedly recommend taking the more scenic route: following CA-9 in the opposite direction, deeper into the Santa Cruz Mountains.

The initial stretch of this route can be characterized as narrow and winding, demanding careful navigation. However, after you pass CA-136, which branches off towards Big Basin State Park, the road becomes significantly less challenging. This section of the drive takes you through a series of charming and artistic mountain towns, including **Boulder Creek**, **Ben Lomond**, and finally, **Felton**. Along the way, you’ll be treated to the awe-inspiring sight of numerous redwood groves, offering glimpses into the ancient and majestic forests that define this region. This scenic detour covers approximately 28 miles and takes around 50 minutes, but the experience is well worth the additional time.

Speaking of redwoods, just a stone’s throw from CA-9, beyond Felton, lies your next destination: **Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park**. While often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Big Basin, this park boasts an extensive old-growth redwood forest that is remarkably accessible for a quick visit.

The Redwood Grove Loop Trail, which is mostly flat, is particularly well-suited for families and those seeking a gentle introduction to the wonders of the redwoods. This easy trail winds through a grove of some of the largest and oldest trees in the park, allowing you to marvel at their immense size and ancient presence. At less than a mile in length, the loop can be completed quickly, even at a leisurely pace, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the redwoods without significantly impacting your travel schedule.

While the San Lorenzo River offers a number of inviting swimming holes on warmer days, it’s now time to continue towards the coast. But before you reach the ocean, there’s one more stop that promises a unique and memorable experience. Returning to Felton, you’ll head towards the quaint and unassuming town of **Bonny Doon**, where the **Beauregard Vineyards Tasting Room and Winery** awaits.

This wine-tasting experience is a world away from the often-crowded and commercialized wineries of Napa and Sonoma. Instead, you’ll find yourself in a nearly 100-year-old redwood cabin, nestled peacefully in the heart of the woods. The drive from Felton covers approximately 10 miles and takes around 20 minutes.

For those who are not driving (and are of legal drinking age), the tasting room offers a selection of local wines crafted from vines grown on nearby Ben Lomond Mountain. You can savor the flavors of the region while enjoying the tranquil ambiance of the surrounding forest. An adjacent creekside picnic area provides the perfect spot to relax and enjoy your wine with some snacks. For those with a sweet tooth, we highly recommend the Late Harvest Zinfandel, a delightful dessert wine that perfectly complements the rustic setting.

Continuing your journey, a short drive through the woods along Bonny Doon Rd. will finally bring you to the legendary Slow Coast and Highway 1. Here, you’ll turn north, heading back towards San Francisco while embracing the stunning coastal scenery.

Just after turning onto CA-1, near the small coastal town of **Davenport**, you’ll find the almost hidden gem that is Shark Fin Cove. This picturesque spot is easy to miss if you’re not paying close attention, but it’s well worth a stop to explore this secluded cove and admire the waves crashing dramatically against the shark fin-shaped island that sits in the middle of the bay.

A short trail leads down to the cove and its expansive sandy beach. However, be advised that the path is steep and can be slippery, so exercise caution. The reward for your efforts is a breathtaking view and a chance to experience the raw power and beauty of the Pacific Ocean.

By this point in your journey, a late lunch is undoubtedly in order. The **Whale City Bakery** offers a diverse to-go menu, perfect for satisfying your hunger. And don’t forget to treat yourself to a few of their homemade pastries for dessert!

With your food in hand, take a short drive (less than 5 minutes) up the road and park along the side of the highway for a picnic on the beautiful and expansive **Scott Creek Beach**. Find a comfortable spot, take a break, and simply enjoy the soothing sound of the surf as you savor your meal.

Alternatively, on a windy day, heading a few more minutes north along the Slow Coast will lead you to **Greyhound Rock County Park**. Even if you are short on time, you can still admire the stunning scenery from the clifftop. However, we highly recommend following the short trail down to the beach, where you’ll be rewarded with even more spectacular views stretching both north and south along this picturesque stretch of coastline.

The park’s location at the tip of a small point often provides a sheltered section of beach, protected from the strong winds that are characteristic of this coastal region. The namesake Greyhound Rock itself can be reached at low tide, offering adventurous visitors the opportunity to climb to the top for even more dramatic and panoramic views.

Continuing north along Highway 1, you’ll pass **Año Nuevo State Park**, renowned for its large population of elephant seals during the winter months, and the rugged **Pigeon Point Lighthouse**, a historic landmark that stands as a sentinel over the Pacific.

A few miles further north will bring you to **Pescadero State Beach**, a fantastic location for exploring tide pools and spotting a variety of marine life, including starfish, anemones, crabs, and more. The intertidal ecosystem here is teeming with life, offering a fascinating glimpse into the wonders of the ocean. The drive from Greyhound Rock to Pescadero State Beach covers approximately 16 miles and takes about 15 minutes.

From **Pescadero State Beach**, a short detour off of CA-1 into the town of **Pescadero** itself is highly recommended. Here, you’ll find the quirky **Downtown Local** coffee shop, a great place to fuel up with a caffeine boost and a tasty treat before continuing the final leg of your drive.

Returning to Highway 1 from Pescadero, follow the undulating road north, past **Half Moon Bay**, to **Pillar Point Bluff**. This section of the drive covers approximately 23 miles and takes about 30 minutes.

A short hike up the bluff will reward you with sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean and the famed Maverick’s surf spot, where big-wave surfers brave towering waves of up to 60 feet during the winter months. Even if you don’t witness the surfers in action, the sheer scale of the waves and the dramatic coastline are sure to impress.

Just a few minutes from the bluff is the historic **Moss Beach Distillery**, a fantastic option for dinner. The distillery boasts an outdoor patio, heated by cozy fire pits, where you can watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean while enjoying a delicious meal.

From here, it’s a relatively short drive before you find yourself back amidst the city lights of San Francisco. This final leg of the journey covers approximately 23 miles and takes about 30 minutes, bringing your memorable road trip to a satisfying conclusion. You will now be able to reminisce about the highlights of your journey in **Saratoga**, **Boulder Creek**, **Ben Lomond**, **Felton**, **Bonny Doon**, **Davenport**, **Scott Creek Beach**, **Greyhound Rock County Park**, **Pescadero**, and **Half Moon Bay**.
