## A Coastal Escape: From San Jose to Carmel-by-the-Sea and Back
This itinerary promises a delightful day trip from San Jose, filled with scenic coastal views, charming towns, and opportunities for relaxation. Prepare for a journey that will awaken your senses and leave you refreshed.
**Highlights of Your Coastal Adventure:**
* Keep an eye out for playful sea otters as you enjoy a leisurely bike or e-bike ride along the stunning coastline.
* Indulge in a picturesque picnic on the sands of beautiful Asilomar State Beach, surrounded by breathtaking ocean views.
* Immerse yourself in the artistic atmosphere of Carmel-by-the-Sea, exploring its unique galleries and shops.
* Unwind and rejuvenate at an outdoor spa, offering a tranquil escape from the everyday hustle.
Your day begins bright and early in San Jose. The first destination is Monterey, specifically Municipal Wharf II. Make sure you don’t confuse this with the more tourist-centric Fisherman’s Wharf! The drive to Monterey will take approximately one hour and ten minutes, covering a distance of 72 miles. The goal? A hearty and satisfying late breakfast at Loulou’s Griddle in the Middle, a local favorite.
After fueling up at Loulou’s, take a moment to stroll along Municipal Wharf II. This is a great opportunity to try and spot some of the local sea life that frequents the area. After your brief seaside exploration, head over to Adventures By The Sea, where you can rent bikes or e-bikes for the next leg of your adventure.
Now, it’s time to embark on a relaxing and scenic bike ride along the breathtaking coast. The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail awaits! As you pedal along, you’ll pass through the historic Cannery Row area, steeped in literary history. The trail then hugs the coastline, offering spectacular views of hidden coves and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for those adorable sea otters, often seen floating amongst the kelp forests.
The trail stretches for approximately 2.5 miles, leading you to the picturesque Lover’s Point Beach in Pacific Grove. Take a well-deserved break here to soak in the beauty of the surroundings. Before continuing, a crucial pit stop is in order! Head to Pavel’s Backerei in Pacific Grove’s charming downtown area. This bakery is the perfect place to stock up on delicious treats and supplies for a delightful picnic later in the day.
Leaving Pavel’s Backerei, return to Lover’s Point Beach and continue your journey by following Ocean View Boulevard. As you approach Point Pinos and its iconic lighthouse perched atop the hill, you’ll notice a change in scenery. The sheltered coves of Monterey Bay give way to a dramatic rocky coastline, where the waves crash against the shore with impressive force.
While you have the option to turn around and head back at any point along the route, it is highly recommended that you continue following Sunset Drive along the coast until you reach Asilomar State Beach. Here, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of white sands, crashing surf, and the vast Pacific Ocean. Find the perfect spot to settle in and enjoy the picnic you so thoughtfully prepared with treats from Pavel’s Backerei.
Once you’ve had your fill of the beautiful views and delicious food, it’s time to make your way back to Adventures by the Sea to return your bikes. This entire round trip covers approximately 11 miles and takes around one hour, not including your stops for sightseeing and picnicking.
With the biking portion of the journey complete, the next destination is the quaint and captivating village of Carmel-by-the-Sea. This charming town became an artist’s colony after the devastating 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake displaced many artists, who then flocked to this coastal haven.
Take a leisurely stroll along Ocean Ave, the main thoroughfare, and admire the unique shops and art galleries that line the street. Be sure to stop at Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company for a warm cup of coffee to invigorate you. Then, head down the hill towards Carmel Beach, widely regarded as one of the most picturesque beaches along this stretch of the California coast.
After enjoying a relaxing walk along the shore or simply admiring the breathtaking view from the park above Carmel Beach, it’s time to begin the journey back to San Jose. The drive will cover approximately 75 miles and take around one hour and fifteen minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
