Overview
The Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs is dotted with numerous ancient fortified structures known as kasbahs, which once served as defensive homes and trading outposts. While some are now protected heritage sites, such as the iconic Aït Benhaddou, others remain in romantic ruin. Built using the traditional “rammed earth” technique, these structures are particularly vulnerable to erosion without preservation efforts.
Further along, in Kela’a M’gouna, you’ll find the celebrated Valley of the Roses. This region blooms with fragrant pink roses each spring and is home to artisanal cooperatives that transform the petals into rose-scented products. According to legend, Rosa Damascena was brought here by pilgrims from Saudi Arabia in the 10th century. If visiting in May, don’t miss the lively Rose Festival, complete with local music, dance, parades, and regional cuisine. These valleys offer rich cultural insight and natural beauty that is distinct to Morocco’s desert heartland.
