Escape the bustling city and sandy beaches to explore the picturesque rural countryside and indulge in a tour and wine tasting at the renowned Vera de Estenas winery. Afterward, venture to the charming village of Requena to uncover its fascinating network of underground caves, once used for wine production.
Highlights of this experience include visiting a historic vineyard estate to sample a variety of wine varietals, touring the fields and production processes of a beloved winery, exploring 12th-century tunnels and caves that were once utilized for wine cultivation, and soaking in the stunning scenery of the Valencian countryside.
Before embarking on this journey, keep in mind that the duration of the experience is approximately 5 hours and is recommended for individuals 7 years old and up. This small group tour also includes a delightful wine tasting featuring tapas of local cheeses and sausages.
During the excursion, your knowledgeable guide will lead you through the Valencian countryside, shedding light on the region’s rich winemaking history and the unique flavors derived from traditional methods and indigenous grapes. You’ll be picked up at the designated meeting point and driven to the town of Utiel, where you’ll be treated to panoramic views of vineyards stretching across the rolling hills.
The first stop on your itinerary is the Vera de Estenas winery, a beloved establishment that has been revitalized in recent decades alongside other independent wineries seeking to elevate the region’s reputation. With its meticulously restored villa and picturesque surroundings, the winery is often referred to as the “Valencian Tuscany.” You’ll have the opportunity to sample a selection of the estate’s varietals, including classics like malbec and chardonnay, as well as indigenous varieties like Bobal sourced from century-old vines.
After spending approximately 1.5 hours at the winery, you’ll journey to the town of Requena, located about 15 minutes away, to explore the Caves of the Villa. These ancient hand-dug caves, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, served various purposes including residential dwellings, storage facilities, and wineries. Delve into the network of caves and interconnected tunnels to discover artifacts that illuminate the area’s rich history of wine production.
As the excursion concludes, your guide will transport you back to Valencia, a scenic drive that takes approximately 45 minutes. The experience is available on select days, with a start time of 9:00 am on Wednesdays and Sundays.
