Vatnshellir Lava Cave Tour
Delve deeper into the fascinating geologic history of Iceland by embarking on a tour of the Vatnshellir Lava Cave located on the southwestern end of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. A scenic 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavik will transport you to this popular cave, which stands as the most visited one in the entire country.
The Vatnshellir Lava Cave is an ancient 8000-year-old lava tube formed by a volcanic eruption originating from a nearby crater within the Purkhólar crater family. As the molten lava cascaded down the hill like a flowing river, it cooled on the surface, creating a solid crust. Once the eruption ceased, the remaining lava beneath the crust slowly drained away, leaving behind an empty tube.
Embark on the tour by descending several sets of stairs to reach the interior of the lava tube itself, where the remnants of minerals left behind by the eruption and retreating lava can still be observed today. The rocks within the cave display a stunning array of colors, including vibrant reds from iron deposits, bright yellows from sulfur, and lush greens from copper. Traverse through this 650-foot-long (200-m) tube, which plunges to depths exceeding 100 feet (35 m).
