Tour the Milodon Cave
Overview
Within this captivating network of caves, compelling evidence of a human presence has been unearthed, dating back an astonishing 11,000 years BCE. These caves provide an incredible insight into the lives of early inhabitants. Furthermore, the remains of fascinating prehistoric animals have been discovered here. Among these discoveries are the skeletal remnants of the mylodon, a large, bear-like herbivore that roamed this region long ago, before ultimately becoming extinct around 5,000 years ago. The cave is thus a window into the diverse and long-gone animal kingdom of Patagonia.
The four-hour excursion designed for exploring this natural wonder includes a memorable hiking experience. The adventure starts at one of the smaller caves, offering visitors the exciting opportunity to venture inside for a mini-spelunking exploration. After this initial foray, the journey proceeds to a cavern of medium size, where visitors can appreciate the unique geological formations and the echoes of history embedded within the stone. The grand finale of the hike culminates at the largest cave, an awe-inspiring space measuring 656 feet (200 meters) in depth, stretching 262 feet (80 meters) in width, and soaring to a height of 98 feet (30 meters). The sheer scale of this cavern is sure to make an impact on anyone who visits. The entrance to this massive cavern is impressive and striking in its own right, bearing a resemblance to the gaping mouth of a colossal giant. Adding to the atmosphere is a life-size replica of a mylodon, standing sentinel just outside the entrance, sparking the imagination and evoking vivid images of a bygone era, a time when this magnificent creature truly roamed and dominated these very grounds. It is easy to imagine what this area was like in the distant past.
