Sloth Discovery Walk
Spot sloths during the day or at night (their most active time) on a wildlife-rich 1-mile trail just outside La Fortuna.
Experience the allure of sloths in their natural environment during a guided tour of a family-operated ecological project near La Fortuna. Choose from morning, afternoon, or evening walks, and follow a short trail with a naturalist guide adept at spotting both two-toed and three-toed sloths lounging in the trees. You might even witness a mother sloth with her baby. Perfect for families, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone enchanted by these gentle creatures, you’ll learn about sloth conservation efforts and have the opportunity to see these perpetually smiling animals, along with other native flora and fauna.
Highlights include observing two-toed and three-toed sloths in their natural surroundings, benefiting from the expertise of a guide trained to locate sloths and other wildlife, and seeing tropical plants and animals during a 1-mile walk through a private reserve.
Before you go, note that the tour lasts 3 hours and is recommended for all ages. It is conducted in small groups and includes water and a fruit snack.
Your journey begins with a convenient pickup from your hotel in La Fortuna, taking you to a private nature reserve just 10 minutes away. Meet your guide, who will provide background on sloths and their habits, and give you a flashlight for night walks, before embarking on the 1-mile (1.5 km) trail. As you proceed, your guide will stop at red flags marking recent sloth sightings by other guides and staff. Look up to spot sloths relaxing in the trees, particularly the guarumo tree, a favorite food source. Your guide will point out these trees and offer specialized viewing equipment for a closer look as you hike through dense forest and along a river bordering the reserve. Although sloths are solitary and spend much of their time sleeping or eating, your guide is skilled at finding them, ensuring you a chance to see them. You’ll also search for other wildlife, take photos, and learn about sloths, the local ecosystem, and other creatures encountered along the way.
During the tour, your guide will discuss the importance of sloth conservation. Due to habitat loss and the sloth’s popularity, illegal trade has increased significantly. This ecological sanctuary supports the animals’ safety by preserving their natural habitat. For an added experience, join the evening walk to observe nocturnal animals and possibly see more active two-toed sloths. When the tour concludes, you’ll be transported back to your hotel.
Start times are daily at 8:00 am, 2:30 pm, and 5:30 pm.
Included in the tour are round-trip transportation from and to your hotel, a naturalist guide, entrance fee, observation equipment (specialized binoculars and flashlight for the night tour), bottled water, and snacks.
