Moon Valley & Death Valley
Overview
Your journey begins with a captivating visit to the Valle de la Luna, also known as the Valley of the Moon, a truly unique destination nestled within the boundaries of Los Flamencos National Reserve. This protected area is celebrated far and wide for its incredible flocks of flamingos, majestic birds who make their home in the seasonal lakes that dot the region. The area is equally famous for its imposing sand dunes and its distinctive and dramatic rock formations, each meticulously shaped by thousands upon thousands of years of persistent wind and salt erosion. This constant natural sculpting has transformed the terrain, creating a surface strikingly similar to the surface of the moon, hence the Valley of the Moon’s evocative name. Among the many geological wonders found here, one stands out in particular: Las Tres Marias (The Three Marias). These are a series of three impressive granite and clay formations that rise dramatically from the ground, resembling a sculpture painstakingly carved by the artistic hand of Mother Nature herself.
Following this lunar experience, the tour progresses onwards to the Valle de la Muerte, or Death Valley. While the name might sound foreboding, the valley earned its moniker due to the presence of towering dunes characterized by their narrow, razor-like ridges that dominate the landscape. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these impressive dunes also offer ideal conditions and breathtaking scenery for the exhilarating activity of sandboarding. Finally, the tour culminates at one of the highest points within the Cordillera de la Sal – the renowned Mirador de Kari viewpoint. This strategically positioned vantage point provides the absolute perfect panoramic view, allowing you to witness a truly spectacular Atacama sunset, painting the sky with an unforgettable palette of colors as the day draws to a close. This moment will undoubtedly be a highlight of your desert exploration.
