This refuge is conveniently located at the base of the majestic French Valley, offering a perfect spot to rest and prepare for the more challenging ascent ahead.
After a refreshing break for water and nourishing snacks at Refugio Italiano, the trail ventures deeper into the French Valley, transitioning into a steeper climb through a captivating lenga forest. Approximately 1.5 miles (2.5 km) beyond Refugio Italiano, you’ll discover a remarkable viewpoint that provides breathtaking panoramic vistas. From this vantage point, you’ll be able to admire the iconic “Horns of Paine” landmark, the three imposing granite peaks that form a key part of the magnificent Paine Massif. The viewpoint also offers unparalleled views of the impressive French Glacier, dramatically hanging down from the imposing heights of Mount Paine Grande.
