Hike to the Base of the Paine Massif
Overview
The sheer magnificence of the views that await you at the base of the Paine Massif are simply unparalleled and create an experience you will always remember.
The complete trekking route spans approximately 11 miles (18 km), typically requiring around nine hours to complete. Throughout the entire journey, hikers are consistently treated to awe-inspiring vistas encompassing rushing rivers, pristine native forests, towering mountain peaks, and vibrant green valleys. Keep a watchful eye out for the diverse array of local bird species, including the majestic condors and the striking black eagles, frequently sighted soaring overhead.
The adventure commences at the Las Torres Hostel, from which the trail initially guides you across the gently flowing Ascencio River. From this point, the path begins its ascent, climbing for roughly 1.5 miles (2.5 km) to reach a strategically positioned lookout. This lookout provides sweeping panoramic views of the valley stretching out below and the imposing surrounding mountains that define the landscape. The trail then meanders onward, weaving through enchanting sections of lush lenga forest. The final 45-minute segment presents the most challenging portion of the hike: a steep ascent that necessitates a demanding scramble across a rugged moraine. This final push leads you to the ultimate destination – the serene lagoon and the coveted viewpoint.
Here, hikers are rewarded with the awe-inspiring sight of the Cuernos del Paine (Horns of Paine) piercing the sky, a truly magnificent spectacle. The entire scene is perfectly poised for capturing some truly incredible photographs, allowing you to preserve the memory of this unforgettable experience. After spending some time at the base, soaking in the scenery, and enjoying a well-deserved picnic lunch, it’s time to begin the descent back down the trail, a journey that typically requires approximately four hours.
