Hike the Kjerag Boulder
This guided hike begins early in the city of Stavanger to avoid the crowds and takes you to the top of Kjerag, a renowned mountain in Norway and one of the most stunning hikes in Scandinavia. Known as the “majesty of the Lysefjord,” Kjerag is situated in the famous fjord in the Ryfylke region of southwestern Norway.
To start your adventure, you will transfer to the shore of Høgsfjord, where a high-speed ferry will be waiting for you. As you cruise through Lysefjord, you will pass by steep mountain walls, waterfalls, abandoned farms, and Preikestolen (Norway’s famous Pulpit Rock). Once you reach the shore, your guide will drive you along 26 hairpin turns on the only road from the village of Lysebotn. From there, you will ascend the Sirdal Mountains to reach the Eagle’s Nest trailhead.
The hike is a challenging six-hour trek with an 800-meter (2,624-foot) ascent that culminates at the iconic Kjeragbolten—a massive boulder wedged securely into a crevasse in the mountain. The trail becomes less steep as you approach the summit, allowing you to fully appreciate the surrounding scenery. Kjerag stands at a total height of 1,084 meters (2,556 feet), making it the highest mountain in the region. From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the mountains, fjords, and Norwegian countryside.
For the adventurous, you can stand on top of the Kjerag boulder, which hangs between two cliffs above the fjord. If you prefer to watch, you can observe base-jumpers as they leap off the cliffs. After a satisfying lunch, you will make your way back down the trail.
