Hike in Medvednica to Zagreb’s Medvedgrad Castle
Overview
Named “bear mountain” in Croatian, Medvednica is located just north of Zagreb and offers a range of outdoor activities. The highest peak, Sljeme, towers over 3,000 feet (1,033 m) and provides stunning views of the surrounding area. The park is a pristine natural environment that is easily accessible from the city.
Embark on the scenic 2-mile (3.2-km) Miroslavec hiking trail, which winds through the forest and along a peaceful stream. The trail leads to Kraljičin zdenac (Queen’s Well), a tranquil spot next to Kraljevec Stream with a small pond. From there, it’s just a short walk to the historic castle.
Built in the 13th century after the Tartar invasion, Medvedgrad is a well-preserved fortress with double walls, moats, guard towers, water tanks, a chapel, and palaces. Explore the castle ruins with a guide who will share the legend of the Black Queen. Don’t miss the eternal flames of the Homeland Altar and capture stunning panoramic views of Zagreb from the castle grounds.
In addition to Medvedgrad, Zagreb offers a variety of excursions for visitors to explore the city and its surroundings.
