Glymur Waterfall Hike
In the region of West Iceland, located approximately a 1-hour drive northeast of Reykjavik, lies the magnificent Glymur Falls. Once considered the tallest waterfall in Iceland at around 650 feet (198 m) in height, the recent retreat of the Vatnajokull glacier tongue has unveiled a slightly taller cascade, Morsarfoss. Nevertheless, Glymur remains one of the most enchanting waterfalls in the country, as it cascades into a picturesque river canyon.
Embarking on a journey to hike Glymur Falls is a popular activity for adventurous travelers. To reach the trailhead, you must drive to the Hvalfjordur fjord and park your vehicle in a designated area. From there, follow the trail which, while not overly strenuous, presents a few challenging sections. The trek is generally moderate with occasional steep inclines and a log crossing. The hike leads you through the stunning Botnsdalur valley, offering breathtaking views along the way.
Upon reaching the falls, marvel at the sight of Glymur plunging into a deep ravine, showcasing truly majestic scenery. Traverse caves, cross the river via stepping stones, and relish the thrill of the adventure.
