Geysir Geothermal Area
The Geysir Geothermal Area can be found in the popular region of the Golden Circle, located approximately 65 miles (106 km) east of Reykjavik. This area is renowned for its bubbling mud pits, steam vents, and erupting geysers, making it one of the most impressive geothermal zones in Iceland. Geysir, after which the area is named, has a geyser that is seldom active these days but can reach heights of up to 230 feet (70 m) when it does erupt. However, the entire area, which encompasses much of the Haukadalur Valley, is home to several other noteworthy sites. The Strokkur Geyser steals the show by erupting every 5 to 10 minutes with heights of up to 130 feet (40 m)! Other notable geysers in the region include Smiður and Litli-Strokkur. Following the mesmerizing geothermal displays, visitors can take a leisurely stroll through Haukadalsskógur, the largest forest in southern Iceland, explore the Tree Museum, or unwind in Kúalaug, a nearby natural hot springs.
