Explore the Cinematic Desert Town of Ouarzazate
Take advantage of your free time to explore Ouarzazate, a picturesque town affectionately known as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” Begin your adventure with a visit to the town’s iconic 19th-century Taourirt Kasbah. Climb to its highest point for panoramic views that stretch across the red-mud city of Aït Benhaddou, the verdant Draa Valley, and even to the rugged Todra Gorge on a clear day.
Ouarzazate gained international attention thanks to the film industry, and you can tour famous movie studios like Atlas Corporation Studios or CLA Studios. Step into the Musée du Cinema, where you’ll find fascinating props and sets from blockbuster films such as Black Hawk Down, Prometheus, American Sniper, and even Game of Thrones.
The town’s Mellah, or Jewish quarter, is another cultural highlight, offering a glimpse into its diverse history. Wander the lively souks and browse artisan stalls for handmade goods like rugs, ceramics, slippers, metal crafts, and spices.
Historically, Ouarzazate has been a meeting point for merchants from the Atlas, Drâa, and Dadès Valleys. In the 1920s, it became a strategic garrison town for the French, and its name, meaning “no noise” in Berber, speaks to its former tranquility. Stroll along Avenue Mohammed V, the town’s main thoroughfare lined with shops, cafes, and local amenities.
Taourirt Kasbah stands as a preserved relic of Glaoui architecture, carefully maintained with UNESCO’s help. Wander the labyrinthine stairwells and admire keyhole archways, stucco décor, and an original tataoui ceiling. Explore the kasbah’s village and local craft shops tucked into its quiet corners.
Don’t miss a visit to Atlas Film Studios, founded in 1983, and often referred to as “Ouallywood.” The studio features sets from legendary films like Jewel of the Nile, Kingdom of Heaven, and Kundun. Tours run frequently and take you through sets and workshops. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a live production in progress!
