Explore the “Blue City” Chefchaouen
Discover the stunning streets, history, and culture of Morocco’s cherished “Blue City,” Chefchaouen—known locally as “chaoeun.” Its name, meaning “two horns,” refers to the dramatic twin mountain peaks that cradle the town. Despite its increasing popularity among tourists, Chefchaouen maintains a calm, welcoming vibe and is home to some of Morocco’s friendliest residents.
Tucked beneath the jagged peaks of the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is arguably one of Morocco’s most photogenic towns. Its blue-washed walls, bohemian charm, and relaxed energy make it feel like a world apart. Founded in 1471 by Idrissid shorfa, descendants of the Prophet Mohammed, it originally served as a defense outpost during the fight against Portuguese expansion in Ceuta.
The town expanded when Muslim and Jewish refugees from Granada arrived in 1494. They built homes with tiled roofs, small balconies, and hidden patios filled with citrus trees. This wave of immigration gave Chefchaouen its distinct Spanish-Andalusian flavor that still defines its architecture and culture today.
Stroll through the old medina, a blend of Moorish and Andalucian styles, where blue buildings line the narrow alleys that spill into Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Here, you’ll find the restored kasbah and can enjoy a quiet coffee or explore the local markets. Continue to the Grand Mosque and tour the Kasbah’s gardens, museum, and former prison. From the top, the view over Chefchaouen is unforgettable.
Then, head into the Quartier Al Andalous to see more examples of historic immigration. Walk past beautifully decorated doors, iron railings, and multi-level homes painted in white, green, or blue. Climb the gentle slopes and admire the unique layout built into the hillside.
Finish your day at Ras el Ma Spring, where you’ll find locals gathering water and washing laundry. Grab a cup of tea at a riverside café and then take the scenic walk to the Spanish Mosque. The uphill trail offers an exceptional view of Chefchaouen, especially at sunset, when the town glows in golden light.
