Easter Island: Orongo & Ahu Akivi Tour
**Overview**
This enriching excursion provides you with the opportunity to delve into the fascinating history and captivating landscapes of Rapa Nui through two distinct half-day tours. Our journey begins with an exploration of **Orongo** and continues with a visit to the intriguing site of **Ahu Akivi**, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the island’s cultural heritage and unique astronomical significance.
The first half of our adventure takes us to the southwest corner of Rapa Nui, where we will discover the haunting remains of the ancient village of **Orongo**. Perched dramatically on the rim of the dormant volcano, **Rano Kau**, this location holds immense historical importance. **Orongo** served as the central stage for the intriguing “Birdman” era. This unique cult emerged on Rapa Nui in the 16th century, marking a significant shift in the islanders’ beliefs and practices. The people, facing times of war and famine, seemingly abandoned the construction and reverence of the iconic moai, the large stone idols that the island is renowned for.
The cult of the Birdman was far more than a simple belief system; it was a challenging and perilous annual contest. In an effort to appease their deities and secure power, the islanders would engage in a daring competition. Brave men would swim from the rugged shores of **Orongo** to two small, isolated islands located just off the coast. Once they reached these islands, they had to patiently wait for the sooty terns to lay their first eggs of the season. The individual who successfully returned to the mainland with the very first egg would be declared the Birdman, bestowing upon him the prestigious title of chief for an entire year.
**Orongo** boasts a multitude of impressive sites that offer a window into the past. We will explore the remnants of the ancient village, stand in awe at the majestic **Rano Kau** volcano, and venture to a cave nestled by the sea, known as **Ana Kai Tangata**. The cave holds a treasure of ancient petroglyphs meticulously etched into the rock by the original inhabitants of the island, providing invaluable insights into their beliefs and artistic expressions. This first half of the excursion culminates in the early afternoon, leaving you with plenty of time to reflect on the captivating history you’ve uncovered.
The second half of our day involves a captivating journey to **Ahu Akivi**, located approximately one mile inland. This site is truly exceptional, renowned not only for its impressive line of seven moai but also for its historical significance as a celestial observatory. In ancient times, the islanders would gather at **Ahu Akivi** to observe the stars and track the celestial movements. A particularly fascinating feature is the positioning of the seven moai. These silent sentinels are carefully aligned to face the setting sun during the spring equinox. Conversely, their backs are oriented towards the rising sun during the autumn equinox, demonstrating a profound understanding of astronomy and the cycles of nature. Furthermore, we will also explore two other noteworthy archaeological sites nearby. We will visit the mesmerizing cave of **Ana Te Pahu**, which is recognized as the largest cavern on Rapa Nui, and we will also witness the imposing beauty of the **Puna Pau volcano**.
