Catamaran Cruise + Water Activities in the Outer Great Barrier Reef
Discover the Great Barrier Reef with this guided catamaran cruise that includes an underwater observatory, semi-sub, & snorkeling.
Experience the rich underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef on this full-day guided catamaran cruise to the Agincourt Reef. The catamaran will depart from Port Douglas to take you to this fantastic ecosystem, which you can view from the vessel’s underwater observatory. Throughout the day, you can learn about the largest coral reef system in the world from a marine biologist, who will share details of this diverse habitat that’s home to over 9,000 known species of animals. Enjoy a tasty buffet lunch on the ship before getting a closer look with a guided snorkeling, scuba diving, Ocean Walker Helmet diving, or a semi-sub trip that will bring you face to face with the sea creatures of the reef.
The day begins with a pickup from your accommodation in Port Douglas, Cairns, or Northern Beaches, although you can self-drive as well to Port Douglas to meet your guide and crew for the excursion. Board the catamaran in Port Douglas and set out for Agincourt Reef, located at the outer edge of the Barrier Reef. “Ribbons” or special reefs run parallel to the Continental Shelf here and are known as the most pristine ecosystems of the Barrier Reef, which you’ll learn all about from the marine biologist on board.
Relax with a drink from the bar or grab a bite at the buffet before getting a closer look at the Barrier Reef. You can head to the catamaran’s underwater observatory to look out at the wildlife just outside. For an even more memorable experience for those who want to stay dry, you can take a ride in a semi-sub that will glide through the reef lagoons, as your guide points out the different animals like reef sharks, parrotfish, and sea turtles and gives you a deeper understanding of the environment. If you want to get your feet wet, you can opt to snorkel, scuba dive, or dive with an Ocean Walker Helmet to explore the habitat, and some of these options can also be guided. At the end of the day, you’ll return to Port Douglas, where you’ll be transported back to your accommodations or can continue on your self-guided drive home.
Highlights of this excursion include scuba diving, snorkeling, or taking a semi-sub cruise through the Agincourt Reef, marveling at sea creatures from the catamaran’s underwater observatory, learning about the Great Barrier Reef from an expert marine biologist, and relaxing and recharging with a buffet lunch and bar on-board.
What’s included in this tour are morning and afternoon teas on board, a reef presentation by a marine biologist, hot and cold tropical smorgasbord lunch, snorkeling equipment, Stinger/Lycra Suits & Buoyancy Aids, return Wavepiercer cruise from Port Douglas, qualified lifeguard supervision, underwater observatory fish & coral viewing, coral viewing by semi-submersible vessels, fish feeding conducted by crew, and the Environmental Management Charge (EMC).
