Bioluminescent Kayak Activity
Nature’s incredible display of bioluminescence, the production and emission of light by living organisms, is the highlight of this unique kayaking excursion.
The mesmerizing bioluminescence of Costa Rica’s Paquera Bay is truly a sight to behold on this one-of-a-kind kayaking adventure. Delve into the glowing waters in a double kayak as your expert guide leads you to prime viewing locations. The experience kicks off post-sunset with a comprehensive briefing on bioluminescence and how the excursion unfolds. Once darkness descends, participants are escorted to the beach and assisted into their kayaks. Spend approximately an hour on the water, paddling through the darkness and marveling at the bioluminescent display created by the microorganisms in the water. Keep a lookout for a “shooting star” – a fish gliding through the bioluminescence, leaving a swift streak of light in its wake. Depending on the day and conditions, there may be an opportunity to disembark from your kayak and stroll along the beach to witness your footprints aglow in the sand!
This activity is available three weeks every month to ensure optimal viewing conditions, as moonlight can obscure the shimmering bioluminescence beneath the water. The darker the night, the more spectacular the display. Each group will be accompanied by a guide, and all participants will be in either solo or double kayaks. While capturing the bioluminescence on camera can be challenging, travelers are encouraged to focus on soaking up the experience and creating lasting memories. Nonetheless, there may be instances where the guides signal the perfect moment to snap a photo.
Throughout the excursion, your guide will make several stops to elucidate the glowing phenomenon further and point out other marine life inhabiting the bay. Upon returning to shore after your bioluminescent escapade, refreshing beverages and towels will be at your disposal. Don’t miss out on this enchanting experience that promises to leave you in awe of nature’s magical creations.
