Azulejo Tile Workshop
Azulejos are the decorative tiles adorning many of the exteriors and interiors of Lisbon’s most beautiful buildings, helping to give the city its distinctive architectural style.
Overview
Learn about the history of these exquisite tiles which originally date back to when Lisbon was under Moorish control in the 13th century. Islamic art typically avoids depicting figures, and so, originally, azulejos used fairly simple and invariably geometric designs to create an astonishing overall effect (there are, however, also examples across the city of more complex tile designs). Armed with this knowledge, you’ll then have a hands-on experience as you learn how the iconic decorations are still created using traditional techniques.
