The stunning Ásbyrgi Canyon, a natural wonder carved out after the last Ice Age, is located just an hour’s drive from the charming town of Húsavík in Northern Iceland. Situated along Route 85, this massive canyon stretches in a U-shape for approximately 2 miles (3.5 km) from north to south, with a picturesque forested valley and a rock island at its base.

Upon arrival, make sure to visit the Visitor Center to grab maps and delve deeper into the history and geology of the area. Scientists believe that the canyon was shaped by ancient floods around 10,000 years ago and 3,000 years ago. However, local legends tell a different tale – it is said that the canyon was created by the hoofprint of Odin’s eight-legged horse, resulting in its distinctive horseshoe shape.

Measuring about half a mile (1 km) wide and reaching depths of nearly 300 feet (100 m) in certain spots, the canyon offers ample opportunities for exploration. If time permits, spend a full day hiking the numerous trails within the canyon. Alternatively, take the route starting from the Visitor Center, which ascends the canyon’s side. As you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a leisurely walk along a flat path to the canyon’s farthest point.
