Costa Rica Entry Requirements

Costa Rica is open to all international travelers without requiring a PCR test as of October 2020. This article describes current entry requirements for entering Costa Rica during the COVID-19 Pandemic, as well as some of the current protocols setup in the country to protect your health. We will keep this up to date as the situation evolves.

For those planning international travel, it’s important to be aware of the current entry requirements for your desired destination. In the case of Costa Rica, international travelers are currently authorized to enter the country through its three international airports. These airports are Juan Santamaría International Airport, Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport, and Tobías Bolaños Airport. As of November 1, 2020, Costa Rica has welcomed visitors from all countries around the globe who arrive by air. However, this is contingent upon travelers meeting the country’s specific visa and COVID-19 entry requirements.

**Requirements to enter Costa Rica:**

Significant changes have occurred regarding entry protocols related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Effective April 1, 2022, the temporary immigration measures that were initially implemented to address the COVID-19 pandemic have been officially repealed. This repeal brings about several important changes for travelers. Most notably, it eliminates the previous requirement to complete the epidemiological form, commonly known as the Health Pass. Furthermore, the requirement for unvaccinated foreigners to possess medical insurance is also no longer in effect.

In simpler terms, there are no longer any specific requirements related to COVID-19 that you need to fulfill to enter Costa Rica. This simplifies the travel process considerably and removes a potential barrier for many international visitors.

Adding to the sense of normalcy, all commercial establishments, activities, and events throughout Costa Rica are now permitted to operate at 100% capacity. This means that you can expect to experience the country’s attractions and amenities without the capacity restrictions that were previously in place.

While some restrictions have been lifted, Costa Rica still emphasizes the importance of certain health and safety measures. The country maintains the requirement for the mandatory use of masks in specific settings. Additionally, the protocol for frequent handwashing and temperature checks remains in place. Compliance with health protocols specific to each tourist activity is also expected.

Upon arrival in Costa Rica, specifically upon landing at Juan Santamaría International Airport, Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport, or Tobías Bolaños Airport, travelers are required to wear face protection. They must also adhere to the strict protocols implemented by the air terminal authorities. These protocols include maintaining physical distancing, utilizing disinfection carpets, and undergoing temperature readings. Travelers are expected to comply with any other sanitary instructions provided by airport personnel.

Furthermore, all non-resident travelers should be prepared to present proof of a return or onward flight ticket when requested by the immigration officer. To safeguard important travel documents, it is advisable to make a photocopy of your passport or take a clear photograph of it, especially the page displaying the entry stamp. Carrying this copy with you at all times during your stay can be beneficial.

**Health Protocols While in the Country**

During your time in Costa Rica, it is important to be aware of the ongoing health protocols. Masks are required in all public indoor venues. This includes wearing masks on all forms of transportation, such as shuttle services and private transfers. Masks are also mandatory in locations like supermarkets, pharmacies, and the public areas within your hotel.

In addition to mask-wearing, many establishments throughout Costa Rica will take your temperature and ask you to sanitize your hands each time you enter their premises.

These protocols are implemented with the primary goal of safeguarding the health and well-being of both visitors and local staff. By adhering to the directions provided by local staff, you contribute to ensuring a safe and enjoyable visit for yourself and others in Costa Rica.

**Travelers Returning to the United States**
