Salto Grande Waterfall
Overview
A day’s excursion dedicated to experiencing the wonder of Salto Grande typically involves a scenic drive to the Pudeto sector of Torres del Paine. This sector is strategically located in the very heart of the park’s enchanting lake district, making it a central hub for exploration. From the Pudeto sector, visitors embark on a relatively short and easy two-kilometer walk along well-maintained and clearly marked paths. These paths lead directly to the raging aquamarine cascade of Salto Grande, situated on the powerful Paine River. Here, the river acts as a funnel, channeling water between the breathtaking lakes of Nordenskjöld and Pehoé. The glacial origins of these lakes contribute to the unique character of the falls, imbuing the rushing water with a milky sky-blue color that possesses an almost dreamlike quality in its visual appearance. Visitors have the opportunity to hike right up to the edge of the falls, peering out as great torrents of water thunder through the narrow bottleneck and crash with immense force dozens of meters into the riverbed below. While you marvel at the sheer fury and undeniable beauty of Salto Grande, remember to keep a watchful eye out for the local wildlife, particularly guanacos (a close relative of the llama), as they are known to frequent this area and are commonly spotted by observant visitors.
