Atacama Desert: Tatio Geysers & Machuca Village
Overview
To fully appreciate the majesty of the Tatio Geysers, it’s highly recommended to arrive early, ideally at sunrise. This is when the dramatic contrast between the frigid early morning air and the intensely hot, boiling water of the geothermal field beneath the earth’s surface creates a mesmerizing display. Witness the awe-inspiring pillars of steam erupting skyward, reaching heights of up to 10 meters (30 feet), a truly unforgettable sight. In addition to the geysers themselves, Tatio boasts geothermal pools, offering visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in and relax within what can only be described as mother nature’s own natural jacuzzi.
The journey back to San Pedro de Atacama includes a worthwhile stop at Machuca, a quaint and unassuming village located on the vast Altiplano. For generations, the resilient residents of Machuca have dedicated their lives to breeding llamas and carefully harvesting Yareta, a remarkable moss-like evergreen plant known for its incredible longevity, surviving for thousands of years. Though small in size, with only around 20 homes and a modest chapel, Machuca extends a warm welcome to visitors. Here, you’ll find local artisans selling their handcrafted wares, providing a chance to purchase unique souvenirs. Moreover, don’t miss the opportunity to capture stunning photographs of the graceful llamas that roam the area, as well as the elegant flamingos that inhabit the nearby marshlands, completing the picturesque scene.
