Visit Trogir, Klis, & Solin
For history and archaeology enthusiasts, there is a plethora of medieval and Roman ruins to explore in the vicinity of Split. Situated on a small island between the mainland and the larger Čiovo lies the ancient coastal city of Trogir. This charming destination is easily walkable, with no point in the historic center being more than a five-minute stroll from the sea. Wander through the narrow stone streets, starting at the Garagnin-Fanfogna Palace and making your way to the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. Admire the intricate Romanesque Portal carved by Radovan in the 13th century, as well as the unique creatures adorning the doorposts.
Continue your exploration by taking a leisurely stroll along the Riva, where you can marvel at the blend of Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, as well as the medieval fortress walls. Follow the path to the Kamerlengo Fortress, a 15th-century stronghold offering panoramic views of the island. Along the way, you may be treated to the harmonious melodies of traditional acapella groups known as klapa.
Before returning to Split, consider a brief side trip to the impressive Klis Fortress. This ancient stronghold, over 2000 years old, sits atop a rocky outcrop overlooking Split and the historic Roman city of Salona (now Solin). Salona was once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatae and ranked among the largest cities in the Roman Empire. Explore the vast Roman amphitheater, where early Christians faced fierce beasts in front of crowds of 60,000 spectators. Despite its historical significance, Salona remains relatively undiscovered by tourists, offering a more intimate Roman experience for visitors.
