Sacred Valley Tour: Cusco – Chinchero – Ollantaytambo
The day tour from Cusco includes a visit to the village of Chinchero, located 45 minutes north. This village was believed by the Inca to be the birthplace of the rainbow and features extensive Inca terraces and colonial-era churches. Chinchero is renowned for its residents weaving alpaca and sheep wool into fine textiles. The tour also includes a visit to a local weaver’s studio for a weaving demonstration and to browse handmade textiles.
Next on the itinerary is a visit to Moray, which consists of giant stone amphitheaters built by the Inca. These complexes are believed to have been used for experimental agriculture in different micro-climates. A short distance away is the Salineras, also known as the Maras Salt Flats. This intricate network of stone pools was developed by the Inca for salt harvesting through evaporation and is still in use today. The tour concludes in the historic town of Ollantaytambo, located high in the Sacred Valley. Visitors will have plenty of time to explore the surrounding stone fortresses, archaeological ruins, and cobblestone streets of the town.
