Rainbow Mountain (Mount Vinicunca) Hike
The journey from the city of Cusco to the trailhead that leads to Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain or MontaƱa de los Siete Colores, takes approximately 3.5 hours by car. The vibrant colors of Vinicunca are a result of ice melt mixing with minerals in the soil, creating a stunning display of purples, greens, reds, and yellows on the mountain’s surface.
Breakfast is provided at the trailhead before embarking on the challenging four-hour uphill hike, starting at an elevation of about 3,700 meters (12,139 feet). Throughout the trek, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the Andes, glacial peaks, red mountains, and rocky hills that line the path. Upon reaching the summit of Rainbow Mountain, visitors have the opportunity to soak in the breathtaking vistas and capture stunning photographs, including views of Ausangate Glacier Peak. Ausangate, standing just under 21,000 feet in elevation, is the tallest mountain in the Cusco region and is part of the Cordillera Vilcanota Range.
After spending time at the top of Rainbow Mountain, it is time to begin the descent back to Cusco. This expedition offers a memorable and challenging adventure through the picturesque landscapes of Peru’s Andean region.
