One day Inca Trail Machu Picchu
The Inca Trail in Peru, starting in Cusco and ending at Machu Picchu, is one of the most well-known treks in the world. For those who are limited on time, there is a condensed one-day version of the trail that still offers breathtaking views and a taste of the stunning scenery along the way.
The journey begins early in the morning with a train ride from Ollantaytambo, a town a few hours away from Cusco, to Km 104. As the train chugs along, passengers are treated to magnificent views of canyons and the Sacred Valley before the landscape transitions into mountainous, semi-tropical cloud forest. Upon arrival at Km 104, hikers embark on a challenging seven-hour trek towards Machu Picchu.
Along the way, hikers will encounter the ancient archaeological site of Chachabamba, which served as a checkpoint for those entering Machu Picchu. The trail then leads to WiƱay Wayna, an Incan rest stop situated at 2,732 meters (8,964 feet) above sea level. Here, a boxed lunch is provided amidst stunning vistas of lush green mountains and native orchids. The path gradually becomes easier as it winds through the cloud forest towards Intipunku, also known as the “sun gate,” offering hikers their first glimpse of the panoramic views of Machu Picchu. After a brief descent, hikers will reach the iconic ruins of Machu Picchu, where they can take a short break and capture memorable photos.
For those pressed for time, a two-hour visit to Machu Picchu is followed by a return journey to Cusco via the trail from Ollantaytambo. Alternatively, if there is an extra day available, overnight accommodation in Aguas Caliente allows for more time to explore Machu Picchu before heading back to Cusco the following day.
