Goðafoss Waterfall of the Gods
Located between the towns of Akureyri and Húsavík in Northern Iceland lies the breathtaking Goðafoss Waterfall, also known as the “Waterfall of the Gods” due to its impressive size and rich history. Legend has it that the waterfall received its name in the year 1000 when Iceland converted to Christianity. According to local folklore, chieftain Þorgeir Þorkelsson tossed the old Nordic gods into the falls to symbolize the transition to Christianity and prevent war.
You can easily spot Goðafoss as it is conveniently located just off Route 1, known as Iceland’s famous Ring Road. Once you park your car, a short and simple walk will lead you to a close-up view of the majestic waterfall. For a more immersive experience, you can choose to take a slightly longer trek along a path that offers different perspectives and multiple viewpoints of the falls.
