Vikingheimar Viking World Museum
Vikingaheimar is located near Keflavík International Airport, just 40 minutes from Reykjavík, and is home to the Viking ship called Íslendingur, a replica of the famous Gokstad ship. The museum was established in 1996 and offers a fascinating look into the life of the Vikings through four exhibitions: the Icelander Viking Ship, the Vikings of the North Atlantic, the Settlement of Iceland, and the Fate of the Gods.
Experts believe the Íslendingur was built in the 9th century CE during the settlement period of Iceland. With a crew of 70, including 32 rowers for the oars, this ship is a remarkable example of Viking craftsmanship. It is said that Leif Eiríksson may have sailed on a similar vessel when he journeyed to North America nearly a millennium ago.
In addition to the replica ship, the museum showcases relics and archaeological findings from the Viking expansion across the North Atlantic and their settlement of Iceland. Visitors can explore artifacts from an ancient farmhouse and learn about the pre-Christian Scandinavian religion, including the various gods and goddesses worshipped by the Vikings.
For a deeper dive into Icelandic culture and history, Vikingaheimar is a must-visit destination. Immerse yourself in the world of the Vikings and gain insight into their seafaring adventures and legendary exploits.
