Before you go, note that the duration of this adventure is approximately 3.5 hours, and it is recommended for individuals aged 5 and up. The experience is designed for small groups, ensuring a more personalized experience.
Your adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel in La Fortuna to the entrance of the 1968 Trail. Upon arrival, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the area’s history before embarking on the trails around Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. The 1.5-hour route offers chances to spot colorful birds, monkeys, and other wildlife. While the hike is generally easy, one section is steep and rocky, which may be challenging for children and those who don’t hike often. The standard excursion covers a 1.9-mile (3 km) trail, but a shorter 1.1-mile (1.8 km) option is available for travelers with reduced mobility. In addition to the park’s lush areas, you’ll walk through regions affected by the 1968 eruption, where the lava flow destroyed much of the natural vegetation. Your guide will share the park’s history before and after the eruption, discuss forest formation and volcanology, and point out flora and fauna that have thrived in the area. You’ll have ample opportunities for photography, capturing sweeping views of the towering Arenal Volcano, the beautiful Lake Arenal, and the extinct Cerro Chato. After completing the hike, you’ll return to La Fortuna to conclude your adventure.
