What you’ll do:
After hotel pickup, you’ll transfer to the La Fortuna Waterfall trail entrance. This protected area is home to abundant wildlife, and you’ll have the chance to observe some of it as you begin your journey toward the waterfall. Fellow travelers have spotted vibrant toucans and even glimpsed sloths. The trail is approximately 0.2 miles (300 m) long, featuring 530 steps and several comfortable rest areas where you can pause and listen to your guide discuss the surrounding ecosystem and geological history.
Not far from the trailhead, you’ll reach an observation deck offering elevated views of the waterfall plunging into the river below. After enjoying the views from the platform, start descending the steps to get close to the waterfall at its base. The descent, while manageable, can be a bit of a workout, so take your time.
Approach the Arenal-Monteverde protected waterfall, which rises to a height of over 230 feet (70 m). You’ll have ample time to take photos at the scenic lookout point right in front of the cascade, and your guide will assist you in finding the best angles. If you wish, you’ll also have about 40 minutes of free time to swim in the river flowing away from the waterfall, an area teeming with colorful fish, or closer to the base of the falls. After your optional swim, you’ll return to the starting point in time for your drive back to your accommodation in La Fortuna.
