Experience the awe-inspiring event of green sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. Begin your adventure by registering at the ranger station with your passport. As you wait for the turtles to arrive, you’ll have the chance to observe these magnificent creatures as they dig nests in the sand. Each mother turtle will lay between 65 to 90 eggs before carefully covering the nest with sand to safeguard their future offspring.
Highlights of this experience include registering at the ranger station, witnessing the turtles as they dig and lay eggs, and observing the protective measures they take to ensure the survival of their young. This event is a hopeful sign for the continued existence of the Pacific green turtle species.
Before embarking on this journey, it’s important to know that the tour lasts approximately four hours and is suitable for individuals aged four and up. The tour is conducted in small groups, ensuring a more intimate experience.
Your evening begins with a convenient pickup from your hotel in an air-conditioned van, transporting you to Playa Minas. Upon arrival, you’ll register at the ranger station and wait for the turtles to make their appearance. The timing of the tour depends on the tides and predictions from park rangers, so patience is key. However, the wait is well worth it as you witness the incredible sight of green sea turtles nesting. Guided by local experts, you’ll follow them to the beach to see the mother turtles dig nests and lay their eggs.
As the turtles cover their nests with sand, you’ll witness a beautiful moment in nature. After a 60-day incubation period, the hatchlings will emerge and make their way to the ocean, representing a new hope for the survival of the Pacific green turtle species.
The tour is available on Fridays and Sundays at 5:00 pm, while it is not available on other days of the week. Included in the tour are a bottle of water, a snack, a naturalist guide, transportation, and the entrance fee.
