You’ll observe colorful birds, from toucans and tanagers to honeycreepers and noisy kiskadees, and learn fascinating facts about endemic flora and fauna as you explore the dense rainforest. Before you go, it’s important to know that the duration of this experience is 1.5 hours, and it is recommended for individuals aged 4 years and up. The group size is small, ensuring a more personalized experience. You’ll be provided with water and a snack during the hike.
The adventure begins with a short transfer from your hotel in La Fortuna, where you’ll meet your naturalist guide and start the easy hike through the lush tropical forest. You’ll explore 50 acres (20 ha) of land where the famous cecropia trees grow, a favored location for both two-toed and three-toed sloths, who love to hang out on these trees and munch on their bright green leaves. The “sloth trail” spans just 1.2 miles (2 km) and is perfect for the entire family, allowing everyone to explore at a leisurely pace.
As you wander through the dense vegetation, keep your eyes peeled; sloths often blend seamlessly into the canopy. Thanks to your guide’s skill, they’ll point out several of these slow-moving creatures, as well as share insights into their behavior and habits. Beyond the eternally smiling sloths, the rainforest is teeming with a variety of bird species. From toucans to tanagers, you’ll have the chance to observe these feathered friends both in the wild and at feeders near the trailhead. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the vivid colors and lively antics of the birds and any other wildlife that crosses your path.
In addition to sloths and birds, your guide will also help you identify other endemic creatures, such as poison dart frogs, bats, and a plethora of insects, each playing a unique role in the ecosystem. To round off your adventure, you’ll enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks, offering a moment to reflect on the day’s discoveries before it’s time to return to your accommodation or, if desired, a drop-off in town to explore shops and restaurants.
