What you’ll do
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive of about 1.5 hours from your hotel in La Fortuna to the entrance of the protected area surrounding the majestic Tenorio Volcano. From here, you’ll lace up your hiking boots and join your professional naturalist guide for a captivating 8-kilometer (5-mile) trek through one of Costa Rica’s most pristine primary rainforests. The trail winds through thick tropical vegetation, alive with the sounds of birds, insects, and rustling leaves, and is home to a vibrant variety of wildlife—look out for monkeys, colorful toucans, frogs, tapirs, and reptiles hiding amongst the trees and vines.
As you proceed, the hike brings you face-to-face with striking geothermal activity. You’ll come across steamy volcanic fumaroles and the famous borbollones—natural pools where gas escaping from underground causes constant bubbling on the river’s surface. One of the most awe-inspiring moments of the trek is arriving at Los Teñideros. This is where two mineral-rich streams come together, triggering a chemical reaction that gives birth to the otherworldly sky-blue waters of the Río Celeste. It’s a moment that feels almost magical, and for many, it’s the visual highlight of the day.
The trail then gradually turns more demanding, ascending a slope that leads to a long stairway—approximately 250 steps—descending to a panoramic viewpoint of the iconic Río Celeste waterfall. With its vividly blue water tumbling over a lush cliffside into a pool far below, the waterfall is an unforgettable sight. Swimming is not permitted, but you’ll have ample time to take photographs, absorb the beauty, and enjoy the natural ambiance before ascending the steps once more to rejoin the trail.
Due to the region’s climate, rainfall is frequent and can turn sections of the path muddy and slippery, especially between September and early December. Be sure to bring suitable hiking footwear and rain protection to stay comfortable throughout the experience.
After finishing the hike, you’ll sit down to enjoy a traditional Costa Rican lunch. Most often, this will be a classic dish known as casado, which includes a combination of rice, beans, salad, plantains, and your choice of protein such as chicken, fish, or beef. It’s a hearty and flavorful way to conclude the adventure. Once your appetite is satisfied, you’ll be comfortably driven back to your hotel, likely feeling energized and inspired by the incredible beauty you’ve encountered along the way.
