Celebrate the Amazigh New Year in Ouarzazate
Overview
In Ouarzazate, the entire community comes together in the town square for a joyful festival that lasts through the night. A highlight of the evening is the traditional meal featuring a couscous dish made with seven different vegetables. Families play a fun game by hiding an olive pit and an almond in the couscous. The person who finds the olive pit is crowned the ‘king’ of the household, making major family decisions for the year, while the one who finds the almond becomes the family’s ‘treasurer,’ responsible for managing finances. This custom is especially delightful for children and is enjoyed by everyone as they share a meal from a communal plate.
This celebration remains largely off the tourist radar, making it a rare chance to enjoy an authentic and immersive experience. You might even be the only foreigner among the locals! The festival also includes a few vendors, poetry readings, and relaxed gatherings at the cafes around the square, creating a memorable evening full of cultural charm.
