Traditional Gnaou Music in Khamlia
Overview
Originally nomads from the Erg Chebbi and broader Sahara Desert, the people of Khamlia have roots in sub-Saharan regions like Mali, Sudan, and Niger. In the 20th century, they established a permanent settlement and continued their traditions of music, healing, and spiritual celebration. During your visit, you’ll meet with local musicians, share tea, and enjoy a performance of traditional Gnaou music.
Their music, characterized by hypnotic rhythms, chanting, and clanging metal castanets, is deeply symbolic and often performed as a form of celebration and remembrance of freedom from slavery. Accompanied by dance, these vibrant displays are rich in history and meaning. Many groups also sell their music, allowing you to take a piece of the cultural experience home with you.
