Bologna Museum of Music Tour
Embark on a fascinating cultural and musical exploration with a guided visit to Bologna’s renowned International Music Museum and Library, established in 2004. Located in the elegantly decorated Palazzo Sanguinetti within Bologna’s historic core, the museum showcases one of the most extensive collections of music-related artifacts in Europe, spanning several centuries of artistic excellence.
As you wander through beautifully frescoed rooms, you’ll encounter rare incunabula, handwritten scores, opera librettos, and an impressive trove of letters and autographs from historical composers and musicians. Much of this archive is thanks to the extensive correspondence of Father Martini, a pivotal figure in European music education, whose network extended across scholars, performers, and composers.
The visit continues at the nearby library inside the convent of San Giacomo Maggiore, also home to the prestigious G.B. Martini conservatory. This library preserves priceless musical texts, dating back as far as the 1500s, including early printed music and valuable handwritten manuscripts.
You’ll also explore a reconstructed workshop donated by the heirs of famed luthier Otello Bignami, showcasing a wide variety of string and wind instruments. Highlights include an 1844 Pleyel grand piano once owned by Gioachino Rossini, historic harpsichords, flutes, oboes, and both vertical and grand pianos from various eras.
Visitors can personalize their experience by selecting from three guided themes: (1) Explore six centuries of musical heritage through the museum’s artifacts and grand rooms; (2) Learn about Gioachino Rossini’s life through objects like his dressing gown and personal memorabilia; (3) Trace Bologna’s influential role in European music as a cultural hub for composers and students seeking mentorship under Padre Martini. This tour is a symphony of history, architecture, and artistic passion.
