Charming lakeside hotel that’s operated since 1889, featuring a restaurant, a gym, and rooms with mountain views
Overview
Jølster Hotel, a Thon Partner Hotel, is a charming establishment that has welcomed guests since 1889. This historic hotel is located in Jølstravatnet, conveniently midway between the bustling cities of Bergen and Ålesund. Its prime location is within a short distance of some of the region’s most spectacular and famous tourist attractions, such as Jostedalsbreen National Park and Astruptunet. The hotel is a large lodge overlooking the water with a parking lot in front and many homes and other buildings dotting the surrounding area.
While the rooms vary, you can expect to find wood floors and neutral walls, with mountainous landscape art on the wall behind the bed. Some rooms have carpets that some guests might consider dated. You’ll find a large desk in your room if you need to work during your stay. The highlight of the rooms is the large windows providing beautiful views of the lake and mountains. If you upgrade, you can receive a room with a balcony to enjoy the crisp mountain air. The no-frills bathrooms feature large white tiles and a shower or shower/tub combination.
Begin your morning with a visit to the breakfast buffet before enjoying a morning workout in the fitness room. The hotel also offers activities like badminton, table tennis, and bicycle rentals to keep you busy when you aren’t sightseeing. Before dinner, check out one of the two on-site bars, perfect for unwinding after sightseeing. Then, head to the restaurant that serves traditional Norwegian cuisine. If you’re traveling with a large group, you can enjoy a meal in a 300-year-old wood cabin, adding a touch of novelty to your dining experience.

Similar in size to California, but with only five million people, Norway has plenty of open space to explore. Its unique fjords, mountains, and picturesque villages give this outdoor adventure paradise a unique character.
When is the best time to visit?
Norway's latitude, with part of the country located north of the Arctic Circle, creates pronounced seasonal differences. Hike and cycle the Scandinavian landscapes, and experience the midnight sun during summer; go dogsledding, skiing, snowmobiling, and see the northern lights in winter.
Where to go in Norway?
The go-to destinations for many travelers are Bergen, the charming villages along the world-famous Sognefjord like Aurland and Balestrand, and the scenic Lofoten Islands. A cultural must-visit is the city of Oslo with its many museums and rich history, while Tromsø and Alta are ideal destinations to chase the Aurora Borealis in winter and the Midnight Sun in summer. There are also plenty of ways to experience Norway off the beaten path, with dramatic landscapes and rich culture around every corner.
How many days do I need?
Some visitors breeze through Norway in three days, and while you can quickly tour the country and get a feel for its natural scenery, we recommend planning a week or more to really take in all that it has to offer.
Getting Around Norway
It's common to use multiple modes of transport when exploring Norway. The "best way" to go depends on the region you're in and how far you're going. Ferries are great for witnessing the powerful fjords, while many of the national parks lend themselves well to road trips—and if you're heading all the way to the Arctic Circle, domestic flights are usually the way to go.
