The most common and arguably most thrilling way to begin your Everest region adventure is by taking a flight from Kathmandu directly to the renowned Lukla airport. This route is considered Nepal’s busiest domestic flight path, transporting countless trekkers and locals alike to the gateway of the Solu Khumbu region, where the majestic mountains await. Landing at Lukla airport, perched precariously on a mountainside, is an experience in itself, offering breathtaking views and a healthy dose of adrenaline.

Flights operating between Kathmandu and Lukla are generally organized into “phases.” Each phase typically encompasses a set of approximately four flights. Upon check-in, your boarding pass will clearly indicate which phase you’ve been assigned to, ensuring you’re boarded onto one of the flights within that particular grouping.

It’s crucial to remember that flights from Kathmandu to Lukla – indeed, all mountain flights within Nepal – are heavily reliant on favorable weather conditions. Mountain weather can be unpredictable, and delays are not uncommon. Therefore, it’s strongly recommended that you factor in a buffer of at least one or two days on either end of your planned flight schedule to accommodate any potential disruptions. This foresight will help prevent any significant impact on your overall trekking itinerary.

* **Important Update Regarding Kathmandu Airport:** Please be aware that Kathmandu’s main airport is currently undergoing extensive renovation work, expected to last throughout 2019. As a result, scheduled flights between Kathmandu and Lukla have been temporarily relocated to Manthali’s Ramchhap airport. This airport is located approximately a 4-5 hour drive away from Kathmandu. During this period, there will be an anticipated nine flights operating daily between Ramchhap airport and Lukla, with departure times ranging from 6:00-6:30 am to 10:30 am. To reach Manthali in time for your flight, you have two primary options: you can either travel to Manthali the day before your scheduled trek and stay overnight in one of the local accommodations (bearing in mind that the facilities are typically basic), or you can depart from Kathmandu around midnight on the same day as your flight. For travelers with limited time or those seeking a more convenient option, it is still possible to arrange a helicopter transfer directly from Kathmandu to Lukla. While more expensive, this option bypasses the road transfer to Manthali and offers a faster and more scenic journey to the start of your trek.
