**Hi Niea! As a seasoned traveler, which destinations hold a special place in your heart, and how would you describe your unique travel style?**

As an Indonesian currently residing in the vibrant city of Melbourne, Australia, my journey across continents began in my childhood, a testament to my parents’ shared passion for exploration and travel. Before embarking on my adventure to Morocco last year, Japan held the undisputed title of my favorite destination. The allure of Japanese cuisine is undeniable, and the efficiency and sophistication of the public train system are truly remarkable. I also found myself utterly captivated by the ubiquitous vending machines, offering everything from steaming bowls of ramen to essential umbrellas. What truly fascinates me about Japan is the harmonious coexistence of its modern advancements with its deep-rooted traditions, a captivating blend of old and new.

Regarding my travel style, a distinct difference emerges between solo excursions and family trips. When venturing out on my own, I prioritize packing light, striving to confine my belongings to a single carry-on bag for trips lasting less than two weeks. However, traveling with my parents introduces a new dynamic, as their penchant for shopping invariably leads to an expanded luggage allowance, regardless of the destination.

**What sparked your interest in Morocco as your travel destination of choice, leading you to explore its captivating landscapes and culture?**

The origin of my fascination with Morocco is rather unexpected – an encounter with an Uber driver. Back in December 2016, while en route to the Paris airport, I had the pleasure of riding with a driver of Moroccan descent. Upon learning of my travel experiences, he spent the remainder of the journey passionately extolling the virtues of his homeland, painting a vivid picture of its beauty and charm. His enthusiastic advocacy proved remarkably effective, as I resolved then and there to add Morocco to my ever-growing bucket list. I dedicated several months to meticulous planning and diligent saving, and almost exactly one year after that fateful conversation, I found myself aboard a plane bound for Morocco.

**As an architect with a keen eye for design, you expressed a particular interest in examining the architectural marvels of Morocco. Did you discover any particular examples that resonated with you deeply?**

Color plays an essential role in my design aesthetic, and this informs many of the choices that I make on a daily basis. I’m naturally drawn to vibrant, colorful clothing, in stark contrast to my colleagues who often favor more understated attire, such as black. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that I found myself particularly drawn to the intricate mosaic tile work that adorns Moroccan architecture. The sheer vibrancy of the colors is captivating, and the intricate patterns offer a wealth of visual texture and depth for the eye to explore. As a Muslim, I’m familiar with the foundational principles of Islamic art and design, which are often rooted in repetition. This simplicity, combined with the diverse range of colors and shapes, creates a sense of complexity, contributing to the unique appeal of Moroccan architecture.

**You chose to prioritize exploring Northern Morocco, foregoing a visit to Marrakech. Was this a difficult choice, and what were the primary factors that influenced your decision?**

Interestingly, this decision was surprisingly straightforward. I had long been captivated by the allure of Chefchaouen, the enchanting village where the buildings are adorned in a spectrum of vibrant blue hues. Given my affinity for color, and my particular fondness for blue, Chefchaouen was an irresistible draw. Moreover, as someone who feels a deep connection to mountainous landscapes, the village’s location nestled within the dramatic Rif mountains added to its appeal. The fact that Chefchaouen remains relatively untouched by mass tourism also played a significant role in my decision, as I sought an authentic and immersive cultural experience. Thus, upon discovering Chefchaouen, I immediately prioritized it over other destinations, including the renowned city of Marrakech.

**What were the most unforgettable moments and experiences that you encountered during your trip through Morocco?**

Without a doubt, Rabat stands out as a highlight of my Moroccan adventure! From the moment I arrived in the city, I was completely captivated, and I’m already planning a return visit in the future. The Kasbah left me mesmerized, and the Marmoleum Muhammad V is an absolute architectural masterpiece. Beyond the city’s landmarks, I was deeply touched by the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people, particularly in Chefchaouen, where I encountered countless individuals who were genuinely friendly and kind. One unexpected highlight was a souvenir that exceeded all expectations: Moroccan argan cream! Initially skeptical, I now regret not purchasing a larger quantity. Fortunately, I fully intend to rectify this oversight on my next visit.

**Can you share your experiences of traveling alone as a woman in Morocco? Had you embarked on solo adventures previously, and what advice would you offer to other women considering a similar journey?**

My initial experience traveling alone dates back to my childhood when I was just seven years old, venturing to another island in Indonesia. However, my true passion for solo exploration blossomed in 2012, following a pilgrimage to Dubai. Since that trip, I have seized every opportunity to travel independently. Among my most memorable solo adventures was a journey to Europe last year, a dream that I had cherished for years. Circumstances aligned after the end of my marriage, and I realized that I needed to embark on this journey for myself. I meticulously planned every aspect of the trip in a matter of weeks, securing tours, visas, and accommodations, and ultimately flew to France on Christmas Day – coincidentally, the very same day that I encountered the Moroccan Uber driver who ignited my passion for Morocco!

Concerning my experience in Morocco specifically, I encountered no significant challenges. As a Muslim woman, I found that my presence was met with acceptance and respect, and I received assistance whenever I needed it. The only real hurdle was the language barrier. I would encourage Western women to greet people with the traditional Arabic Muslim greeting, *assalamu’alaikum*. A genuine smile and willingness to engage in conversation can go a long way!

**Finally, where are you planning to travel to next, what exciting adventures await you on the horizon?**

At the moment, I am enjoying the wonders of Spain. My next booked trip will be to Hong Kong and China. This upcoming adventure will be during the Easter holiday. Unlike my previous solo travels, this trip will involve traveling with my parents and my two-year-old niece. This means that I will have to slow down my usual travel pace and be more mindful of everyone’s needs and comfort. Nonetheless, I believe that it will be worth it, as I plan to take my niece to Disneyland, creating memories that we will cherish for years to come!
