Petra In May Travel Tips Weather And More

The transition month from spring to summer means warm (even very warm) temperatures. And rains? Not in May! The desert landscapes are still lush and ablaze with the last gasp of wildflowers–including the exquisite Jordanian black iris (the national flower). But Jordan’s number one attraction is still crowded, especially in the early part of the month.

## Weather in Petra during May

May presents itself as an exceptionally agreeable month for experiencing the wonders of Petra, blessed with weather conditions that hover around an almost ideal average of 73°F (23°C) throughout the month. However, prospective travelers should be aware that this is merely an average; some days, particularly as May progresses toward the warmer embrace of June, will undoubtedly register significantly higher temperatures. The average high temperature reaches 82°F (28°C), inviting visitors to bask in the sun’s warmth. Conversely, there may also be occasions when the temperature dips into the mid-fifties Fahrenheit, offering a refreshing contrast. Rainfall is practically non-existent during this period, with precipitation occurring on only one day, on average, throughout the entire month. It is strongly recommended to equip yourself with an ample supply of sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, along with a wide-brimmed hat to provide shade, sunglasses to shield your eyes, and comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes to navigate the varied terrains of Petra.

Furthermore, it is essential to be aware that beginning in May, the country of Jordan becomes susceptible to the influence of the *khamseen*, a distinctive and potentially disruptive weather phenomenon characterized by dry and occasionally gale-force desert winds that originate from the vast expanse of the Arabian Peninsula. These winds are drawn in by areas of low pressure. Heavily laden with sand and dust particles, the *khamseen* has the potential to obscure the skies and reduce visibility. However, it typically subsides after a few days. Despite its temporary impact on the atmosphere, the hot wind can cause a rapid and substantial increase in temperature, sometimes by as much as 50°F (10°C). Petra, situated at an elevation of approximately 2,650 feet (810 m), is not immune to the effects of the *khamseen*, so visitors should be prepared for the possibility of this weather event.

## Crowd Levels and Costs in Petra during May

May, along with April and October, stands out as one of the most sought-after months for travelers to explore the captivating landscapes of Jordan. As a result, visitors to Petra should anticipate encountering considerable crowds, especially during the initial weeks of the month. However, as May draws to a close and June approaches, the number of tourists typically begins to diminish gradually. Airfares, accommodation rates, and the prices of organized tour excursions and packages tend to reach their peak in early May, making it challenging to secure budget-friendly options during this period. For travelers who are mindful of their spending, opting to visit Petra towards the end of May may prove to be a more economical choice, as prices generally begin to decline as the high season tapers off. Securing both flights and accommodations well in advance is particularly advisable for those planning to travel in early May to ensure availability and potentially benefit from lower rates.

## Activities and Experiences in Petra

Once you have dedicated a day or two to immersing yourself in the exploration of Petra’s primary archaeological sites and traversing its captivating trails, consider embarking on a visit to Petra by night. This unique experience offers an enchanting perspective on the ancient city. The Siq, a narrow gorge that serves as the main entrance to Petra, is illuminated by the soft glow of numerous candles, creating a magical pathway leading to the Treasury. Here, you will be treated to a traditional Bedouin performance set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Treasury, illuminated by the flickering light of over 1,500 candles.

The “Petra By Night” experience is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. It’s an experience that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages, and children under the age of 10 are granted free admission. You can register for the experience at the visitor center or purchase a ticket from your hotel or a local tour agency. However, it’s important to remember that the walk from the entrance to the concert venue is approximately 1.2 miles (2 km). The surge of the crowd through the dimly lit Siq, all vying for a good seat, can be a bit overwhelming. Similarly, the exodus after the show can be quite congested. To make the most of the experience, it is recommended to arrive early to be among the first at the gate and to linger a bit after the performance to enjoy a more relaxed and unhurried exit.

Unbelievably, even the bars in Petra are ancient! In fact, the Petra Guest House Hotel is home to what is considered the world’s oldest bar. This neon-lit Cave Bar is a popular spot in Petra, and not only because of the chill cocktails and the exceptional fusion and pub fare. The unique setting is within a two-millennia-old Nabatean tomb, carved into solid rock and illuminated by lanterns. The carved niches add a touch of romance to the ambiance. A visit to the Cave Bar is highly recommended.

If you plan to spend two or three days in Petra, consider dedicating a half-day to a guided trek up Mount Aaron, which is Petra’s holiest site. This site is venerated by Muslims as the burial place of Prophet Haroun and by Christians and Jews, since according to Old Testament legend, Haroun was Moses’ brother, Aaron. When visiting Mount Aaron, it’s important to wear respectful clothing (avoid shorts) and bring plenty of water and snacks for the strenuous uphill hike to the rather modest mountaintop monastery. The view from the top is absolutely sublime. Be sure to bring some cash for a small donation at the shrine.
